Out of all my years in internet marketing and search engine optimization I get surprised to see businesses make the same mistakes when it comes to their SEO strategy. Actually let me rephrase that, “I get surprised that I’m not surprised to see these 5 common Professional SEO Mistakes”. Most companies don’t even know they are making these mistakes and it’s really holding their search engine rankings back.

What are these 5 mistakes you ask? We’ll get to that in a second. First let me point out that these mistakes usually are a product of bad SEO by an online marketing agency or the company has an in-house marketing team that doesn’t have enough understanding of how to implement Professional SEO Mistakes correctly. Either way, all of the mistakes can be prevented and help you get over the hump.

Duplicate Content

Duplicate content is a search ranking killer! Whether your building a new website and stealing content from a competitor or somebody’s stealing yours, having duplicate content across the internet is no good. If you’re redesigning your website or having a new one built, take the time to create engaging content that allows you stand out over your competition.

Yes it can be very time consuming and tedious but you’ll be thankful that you put in the effort. If somebody’s been stealing your content and you know without a doubt that it’s yours, report them. You should also use embed anything technology that forces the thief to leave a link back to your site if they try to steal your content. You can use a tool like CopyScape to run a url check for your website to see if you have any duplicate content coming up or being indexed by Google.

Duplicate Web Pages

Have you ever come across a business that may have several service areas around the city they operate in? If so, you may have noticed that some of these websites have a service page for each of the cities they service. Most of the ones I have seen have pretty similar content or duplicate content for each city page. You definitely want to avoid this practice. It’s great to have service pages on your website but not to the extent that every page says the same thing. You’re not going to get any bonus points from Google.

Outsourced SEO

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, outsourcing your SEO to a cheap agency in India or Pakistan should be avoided at all costs if you live in the United States. Yes it may be much cheaper and save you a lot of money, but what are we really after here? Do you want results or are you more concerned with the price tag? Quality SEO should not be purchased on price tag alone. Most of the well-known SEO firms in the USA, the ones that actually get clients results, don’t come cheap.

You get what you pay for. And with higher prices these types usually give the client an awesome ROI. If you outsource your SEO I guarantee you your SEO strategy will be filled with strategies that were used 8 years ago or you will risk a manual penalty from Google. In the long run it’s not worth it. I’ve seen the quality of service that some of these foreign agencies use and trust me, they do things much differently than what we do here int he states. Google will take notice eventually. Besides, if you’re worried about price, perhaps you start small and build. But you can’t base your SEO on price alone. It’s all about the quality of service, results, and communication you will have with your SEO provider.

Bad On-page Optimization

Your website must be optimized for the search engines properly. This means all content must be optimized, title tags must be set up correctly, meta descriptions for each page of the site, the correct use of keywords based on local presence or national, xml sitemap should be set up and uploaded to Google, each image should have Alt text, correct use of H tags and all tags should be optimized.

I could go on and on but I think you get the picture. I’ve seen websites that still have the word “Home” in their home page title tag. That tells the search engines absolutely nothing. There are a million different definitions for the word “home”. Be specific without exceeding 70 characters; use a keyword in the title tag description. Each page of the site should be unique. Also be sure and brand your company name in the title tag.

Spamy Back Links

This one is my favorite. After all the updates and all the Google guideline changes Google have made over the last 7 years you would think people would get the picture. Apparently Not!! Back links must be earned. If somebody finds your website and it’s content appealing they will link to your site. Even better, if they happen to write a blog post using unique content with a keyword link pointing to your site, that’s really helpful to your rankings.

What you don’t want to do is try to manipulate the search engines by posting comments at the end of a blog and pick up a cheap keyword link from that area. Foreign SEO firms still use this tactic and you will get caught. This is a No. Stay Away From This Practice. In combination with content based back links, register your website in local social business directories. Take the time to fill out all your company info, such as address, how many employees you have, hours of operation, url address, how long you’ve been in business, and what you specialize in. This may seem tedious but registering your website in a top notch directory like DMOZ or BOTW can go a long way.
